Walrus is currently in testnet, and when it transitions to mainnet, the data will uploaded to testnet will not persist. Subscribers to Tusky's Pro plan will automatically have their data migrated to mainnet, but the blob and transaction IDs will change. This would make testnet usage unsuitable for certain use cases such as NFT asset storage, where smart contracts require a fixed URI for the assets's location.

1. Decentralized personal storage

Dropbox is good, but Tusky is better. With Tusky, you can create a decentralized personal storage solution to safely store important files like family photos, videos, and documents.

Centralized service providers such as Google Drive and Dropbox might access or control your data, while Tusky ensures you maintain full ownership and control over your information. Walrus offers far greater resilience than centralized providers, making it a more secure choice for your personal storage needs.

2. Storing media assets

Walrus can store multimedia content, such as videos, images, and audio files, which is often large and unstructured. This makes it perfect for content delivery networks (CDNs) and streaming services where fast, reliable access is essential.

NFT assets can also be stored in a decentralized manner, ensuring their integrity and accessibility.

3. Artificial intelligence

Walrus facilitates the storage of clean datasets, model weights, and training proofs, ensuring data integrity and quick access for AI models.

Additionally, Walrus can be used to ensure the availability and authenticity of AI outputs, supporting the development of reliable and verifiable AI models.

4. Backups and recovery

Organizations can securely store backups of critical data and applications, ensuring quick recovery in the event of data loss, system failures, or disasters. Walrus’s architecture stands out as a very resilient solution, offering extreme redundancy by maintaining multiple replicas of your data across a global network of nodes.

5. Archiving

Walrus is also an effective archival solution for data that needs to be retained over long periods and may need to be frequently accessed. This is particularly valuable for industries with strict data retention requirements, such as healthcare, finance, and government. Walrus allows organizations to store historical data, legal documents, and other long-term records cost-effectively while ensuring they remain accessible when needed.

Blockchain histories can also be archived on Walrus, providing an extremely resilient and decentralized way to preserve blockchain data.

6. Storage for Layer 2 blockchains

Layer 2 blockchains can leverage Walrus to store their off-chain data in a decentralized manner, avoiding the reliance on traditional cloud services. By using Walrus, these blockchains benefit from decentralization and the high availability and reliability required for their transaction data and proofs.

7. Gaming assets

Sui aims to drive web3 mass adoption through gaming, and Walrus can play a crucial role in this mission. Game developers can utilize Walrus’s blob storage to manage and store large game assets, such as textures, maps, audio files, and player data, ensuring seamless and immersive gaming experiences.

8. Decentralized web experiences

Walrus can be used to host static website content, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files, ensuring quick and reliable access for visitors. By hosting these static assets, Walrus enables decentralized applications (dApps) to deliver user interfaces (UI) without relying on traditional, centralized servers.

9. Decentralized Social (DeSoc)

Decentralized social platforms can leverage Walrus to store user-generated content such as posts, images, and videos in a decentralized manner, ensuring resistance to censorship and centralized control. With its scalability and accessibility, Walrus is well-suited to support globally distributed user bases.
